Meet The Real Joey B – Ghana’s Finest
We had Joey B exclusively tell Coke Studio Blog more about himself and his music career.
Hi there, this is your boy Joey B also known as Beezy. I am a Ghanaian Hip-Hop artist known for mellow vibe music and a unique sense of fashion to boot. I have dominated the airwaves with hit songs including Strawberry Ginger, Tonga featuring award-winning Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie, U x Me, FOH featuring Medikal, and Sunshine.
I was born in the Cape Coast, Ghana and realized my talent for music at the age of six when I formed a group and aided in ghost writing most of the songs we made together. This bolstered my unrelenting strong desire for music and so I pursued it. I did my primary education at St. Theresa's School and later went to Accra Senior High School.
My real name is not Joey B, I am Darryl Paa Kwesi Bannerman-Martin. The name Joey B came by this one time as I was hanging out with my friends in primary school on a basketball bench. A white man came to ask for directions and he said to me: “Excuse me, Joey!” We all looked at each other wondering who Joey is and he pointed at me, so I asked him why he called me Joey and he said I look like a “Joey”.
When I started music I used to be in a group of about six members, known as Skillion. At the time, it was hard to stand out in the group. Everyone wanted to be bigger and at some point I could not take it so I decided to go out on my own. Then I came out with the song Tonga, which basically means a girl. The song talks about all the things that men do to get a woman.
My fashion sense hmmm! I like to keep it simple all the time, I am not too much of a designer person and I always make sure I leave the house with my fashion intact. Even if something goes wrong I keep an extra pair of clothes in my trunk. I also spend lots of money on my clothes, shhh! That is my biggest secret; do not tell my mom, lol.
Get to know more about me and hear my music on this season of Coke Studio Africa.
