Ghana Meets South Africa: Amanda Black and Joey B

Before Coke Studio Africa 2017 paired South African singer Amanda Black and Ghanaian Hip-Hop star Joey B, the two did not know each other and had neither heard one another’s songs. Now they are fast friends; talking about each other and the fun times while at Coke Studio. We asked them to reveal things we didn’t know about their chemistry:

New Music Out

Joey B has a new EP out titled “Darryl”. He says his EP has been doing exceptionally well since it dropped. “Ever since the EP dropped its been number 1 for two weeks,” Joey says, adding, “it’s my first major project as I normally release singles only.”

There’s a Joey B Remix by Amanda

After seeing Amanda Black do a cover of his song, Joey B is convinced that she should keep the song. He says: “She should keep it – I don’t like the song any more. She’s such a pro, she did it all in just one take – boom! This is her thing – she is a real singer so it’s much easier for her.” Amanda was just as impressed with the cover Joey did of her song. She admits: “I love the cover he did of Amazulu, I haven’t heard many covers of that song and it’s one of my most personal songs.”

Best Friends Forever

Their pairing has led to a friendship that they both term as genuine. Joey says: “She is now my bestie – even though I have never even had a female best friend, she is too cool. I have also never worked with such a singer who has such an amazing energy.”

Best Discovery

Both Joey B and Amanda are blown away by The Redfourth Choir, who join their Coke Studio collabos. Joey says: “I really want to see the Redfourth Choir again – they were so amazing! I felt it on both the songs we performed.”

Culture Exchange

During their cultural exchange, we discover that Joey B doesn’t eat Jollof Rice. He says: “I feel like I am the only one who doesn’t eat Jollof.” Amanda says: “He made me “Kelewele” (Ghanaian Plantain). I am going to visit Ghana soon and you have to come to South Africa,” she tells Joey B.
